Red Shawl Day is a time to bring attention to the horrible acts of violence committed against Indigenous people, particularly women and children.Thanks in large part to current Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland (then a U.S. House representative from New Mexico), the "Not Invisible Act of 2019" established the Department of Interior and Department of Justice Joint Commission on Reducing Violent Crime Against Indians, which seeks to reduce violence against Indigenous people.At Hot Springs National Park, we commemorate this day by wearing red shawls.
