Hayley | All Things Donor Conception on Instagram: "It suddenly dawned on me this week that it’s been over two years since I first located Jonathan - my parent’s anonymous sperm donor. My biological father. Two years since I stood on the doorstep of a stranger’s house, looked into the eyes of a man who I had never met , and yet who’s smile instantly felt familiar. Despite it being nearly 8 years since my discovery (that I was donor conceived) , I still have days where I wake up and say to myself .. ‘wow did that sh#t’ actually happen !?’Like some crazy dream or parallel universe that I had inadvertently stepped into, but which now I can’t even imagine not being part of my story. As many of you know I’ve been fortunate to find a very kind , considerate man in my genetic parent Jonathan. He has welcomed me into the fold of his existence with open arms, a positive experience I know many people like me are sadly not afforded. Despite being no more prepared than I for this ‘collision of acquaintances’, Jonathan has been consistently present over the last 2 years, yet observed a level of respect for me , my family and my Mum and Dad. He hasn’t tried to force meet-ups, nor fit the societal role of ‘father’ , he has just been there . A quiet constant. Answering my questions as and when they have occurred , provided photos and snippets of information that have calmed my curiosity about my genetic heritage. The awkwardness of the new relationship has faded , and I no longer worry or over analyse our conversations. I feel quite settled actually, and content in not having to define our situation to anyone. If I am honest, Jonathan and I get on very well - which helps ! Whether we ‘get on’ because we share DNA, or just because we are people who share similar interests … who knows ?! What I do know is that I enjoy his company, and it is likely that it is this enjoyment that has fuelled our in person meet-ups every 3 months or so over the past two years (Covid permitting).
