As he went to take his last foot off the bottom step, he slipped and fell backwards onto the tiles. I knew he hit head first because it was such a loud bang. He instantly cried. I cuddled him but felt something was off. He would normally calm down when I cuddle him, but this time he didn't. Suddenly my son stopped crying and said 'mummy' before going completely limp, and his eyes rolled back. I immediately called 000. The paramedics arrived 5 minutes later. They suspected a concussion and took him to the hospital to be monitored. At the hospital from 6-11pm he threw up twice. By 11pm they said it had been a few hours since his last vomit, and he looked ok. They felt his head and said they couldn't feel any fractures - you couldn't even see where he hit his head because there was no lump or red marks. The first photo is how he looked that night. I asked multiple times what signs would indicate a brain bleed. They told me redness behind the ears and bruising under his eyes. I asked again if they thought a scan would be good, and they said no because he wasn't showing any signs, so we took him home on Friday. On Sunday, the lump turned soft & squishy. He cried uncontrollably and grabbed his head, so we took him back to the hospital. On the way, he vomited violently multiple times. Once again, the doctor told us he didn't think a scan was necessary, but because he was finishing his shift, he would check with the next doctor about what she wanted to do. This lady was our saving grace! She said yes, he should have a scan and thank god! When she came to us with the results, my heart sank. He had a skull fracture and a brain bleed, creating a large haematoma. We were rushed from our local hospital to the Children's Hospital within an hour. When we got there, we were told how bad it was. A large blood clot was pushing on his brain, and they needed to operate immediately. We arrived at 9pm and by 10pm he was in surgery. We were there for 10 nights as he had lost all his balance and had to relearn to walk. It’s so important to trust your gut and advocate for the little human who can’t!"" | Zootzle
